Celebrating Spokane

Spokane, Washington

Huntington Park on the Spokane River is all of these things: a tribal gathering place, a historic hydroelectric development, a public park and river promenade. Renovations of the park incorporated all of this history and activity into a functional and informative experience. Because the Spokane River fueled early economic growth and industry, the new landscape features themed structures, hydroelectric dam artifacts, and period light fixtures to highlight the industrial history of this River City.

Throughout the park, impressive views of the gorge are trumped only by the amazing power of the river as it flows over the Monroe Street weir and plunges down the Lower Falls. Sculptures depicting the celebration of salmon by Native Americans are mounted on existing rock outcroppings in the park. Picnic and grassy play areas are landscaped with native plant material.

Project Details:

  • Improved pedestrian connection to Riverfront Park
  • Enhanced programmable space with water feature & sculptural elements
  • River overlook opportunities
  • Native plant communities
  • Interpretive Signage and hydroelectric facility artifacts
  • Spillway liftgate shade structure
